 Frequently Asked Questions: Additional Information
What is the Utah Wilderness Coalition? The Utah Wilderness Coalition (UWC) is currently comprised of over 255 citizens' groups. It was formed in 1985 when Utah conservationists became convinced that the original BLM wilderness inventory had fallen short of its congressional mandate. To take their case to the public, they formed the UWC. The first action of the UWC was to form the Citizens? Wilderness Proposal, which proposed 5.1 million acres of wilderness in Utah, later upgraded to 5.7 million acres. This proposal was embodied in H.R. 1500, introduced in 1989 by then Utah Congressman Wayne Owens. Recently, the UWC resurveyed Utah wild lands to determine if any acres had been lost in the last 10 years since the first inventory, and to see if there existed any additional wilderness lands missed in the first go-around. We found over 9 million acres of qualifying wilderness lands, now reflected in the new improved America?s Redrock Wilderness Act.
