Top Six Things You Can Do to Protect America's Redrock Wilderness

1. Write a Letter to Congress

Write a letter to your Congressperson asking them to co-sponsor America’s Redrock Wilderness Act. Getting your Representative or Senator to co-sponsor is a giant step in committing their vote when Utah wilderness is considered in committee and on the floor. Not only is this an incredibly important letter in moving the issue forward, but defensive letters fighting off any bad bills that are being debated significantly helps provide your elected official direction on how to vote to protect endangered wildlands.

If you need help determining who your Congresspersons are, go to the following web site: www.congress.org. Enter your ZIP code to determine your Senators and Representatives.

NOTE: It is much less effective to send an e-mail message than it is to send a physical letter.

2. Join or Start a State Activist Group

Working on America’s Redrock Wilderness does not have to be an individual endeavor. Make your efforts much more effective by networking with others in your state through a state activist group. There are an increasing number of these groups using names such as North Carolinians for Utah Wilderness.

3. Add Your Group to the Utah Wilderness Coalition

The Utah Wilderness Coalition (UWC) is the umbrella organization consisting of all the groups nationwide who support America’s Redrock Wilderness. Right now it consists of 226 groups and is growing daily. If you are associated with a group and are interested in keeping them up-to-date, informed regularly, and generally in-the-loop about Utah wilderness issues, join up! See the group sign up section.

4. Give the Utah Wilderness Coalition Your Contact Information

The UWC is not a traditional membership-based organization. It is an organizing mechanism whereby its 226 member groups build national consensus to protect America’s Redrock Wilderness. However, over the years, the UWC has compiled a database of people across the country who have seen our slideshow presentation or who are generally interested in helping protect America’s Redrock Wilderness. When the time comes for quick action, the UWC alerts its activists accordingly. The "membership" requirements for the UWC are minimal, determined by how much time or effort you could give. Even if you can take a few "actions" per year, that is enough. To add your name to this list of Utah wilderness activists, go to the individual sign up section.

5. Write a Letter to the Editor

One of the quickest, most effective thing you can do to protect America’s Redrock Wilderness is to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. This effectively magnifies your voice thousands of times over. Simply send your letter to the editor, usually 300 words or less, and explain why you support America’s Redrock Wilderness Act, encouraging your elected officials to do the same. This also works well fighting defensively against bad legislation or policy.

6. Set Up and Attend an In-District Meeting With Your Member of Congress

Visiting with your member of Congress while they are back in their home district plays a critical role in letting your member know that Utah wilderness is an important issue back home. Conveying the message that this is an important issue inside their home district will enable your member of Congress to become a more effective advocate for Utah wilderness back in DC.
