Wild Utah: America's Redrock Wilderness

SAN RAFAEL REEF
This unique redrock feature runs for 50 continuous miles, forming from an ancient uplift at 45 degrees. Once uplifted, erosion has now carved sinuous and deep narrow canyons throughout the Reef feature, as well as through the roughly 1 million acres of wilderness in the Swell region. The San Rafael Swell has been a controversy for several years. The Utah Wilderness Coalition advocates for permanent protection of the San Rafael Reef by enlisting the area into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Unfortunately, Utah politicians would like to see this area have little protection and be opened for development; therefore they would like to see the Reef designated a National Monument or National Heritage Area.
